We left Mannheim at 7.30 this morning bound for Munich then Innsbruck. Munich is known for its beer halls, the most famous being the Hofbrauhaus. Did you know that monks have made a beer thats 21% alcohol! After a quick stop at Munich we headed out for Austria. Within 10 minutes of leaving Munich the landscape changed dramatically. We started seeing snow capped alps in the distance, this made me very excited as I have never seen snow before. Another little known fact is that the Austrians invented the croissant, not the french. They dip into their coffee. We arrived at our hotel in Innsbruck and I am instantly in love, its what you read about, cobble stone streets, snow on the alps right in front of you and horses clip clopping along the streets. We had some free time to look around and take some snaps before we had dinner at a local restaurant with a harpist playing. Currently 8c and raining
The next morning we left Innsbruck (it snowed overnight) and we headed for Salzburg, home of Mozart! It was FREEZING in Salzburg, but we met with a local guide who took us around the city where we saw some beautiful churches and a very old graveyard .
We then left for Vienna, we have 2 nights here and we stayed right on the danube (lovely hotel) That night we went to Marcheldahof restaurant. Now this place is crazy, we were prewarned to bring our cameras and I am glad I did. There was not one part of the walls or ceiling that didnt have something hanging off it. When we arrived they even rolled out the red carpet for us, stopping traffic in the main street.
The next morning we went to Schonbrunn Palace. Mozart played here when he was 6. Schonbrunn means beautiful fountain. This place is massive with 1141 rooms, the imperial family spent their summer holidays here.
We walked around Vienna with another local guide and saw some of the places that the sound of music was made. We had lunch back at the hotel as it was too cold to stay out any longer. Later that night we went out to a local restaurant to have a traditional Hungarian/Austrian dinner. That included a massive meat plate…mmm yummy my fave! (kidding)
We ended the night with a Viennese concert where they played Mozart, Strauss and Beethoven. This was a bit of a thrill I have to say, the musicians were outstanding and Strauss actually played in this venue.
