What to Do if It Rains on Your Wedding Day (Photography + Timeline Plan)

You’ve planned everything—the dress, the flowers, the timeline, the ceremony… and then the weather app suddenly shows clouds and raindrops. Before panic sets in, breathe. I’ve photographed countless weddings in sunshine, mist, showers and even thunderstorms — and I promise: rain can actually make your photos even better.

Soft light, romantic atmosphere, dreamy tones… sometimes the rainy weddings are the most magical.

Here’s exactly what to do, what to expect, and how to be fully prepared.

Rain gives you:

  • soft flattering skin tones

  • romantic atmosphere

  • moody skies and misty backgrounds

  • beautiful reflections on pavement

  • candid natural interactions (“let’s huddle under the umbrella!”)

And yes — you can absolutely look stunning in cloudy light.

Bring matching umbrellas (clear is best)

I always recommend couples have:

  • Clear umbrellas for the wedding party

  • A couple of spares for family photos

  • A large golf-style umbrella for movement between locations

Clear umbrellas allow light in — so your faces stay bright, not shadowed.

Don’t worry, I usually bring extras too!

Have a wet weather ceremony and photo plan.

If your venue has:

  • a covered verandah

  • indoor ceremony option

  • marquee

  • undercover garden pavilion

…great! These work beautifully.

If not, we pivot to sheltered areas for family & group photos:
doorways, big trees, archways, wide eaves, beautifully lit interiors.

The wet weather timeline example

Here’s a calm, realistic rainy-day timeline adjustment:

Before ceremony
– Couple + wedding party stay indoors until go-time
– Quick, cosy getting-ready photos inside

Ceremony
– Indoors OR covered area
– Backup umbrellas ready for outdoor walk-ins

Family photos (20–25 min)
– Under cover
– Fast rotation
– Minimal waiting

Couple portraits
If light rain: outside with umbrellas
If heavier: indoor architecture + sheltered outdoor spots

  • then, if rain pauses — quick dash outside for dreamy shots

Reception
– Candid & atmospheric
– Rain outside = reflections + magical window shots

The key is flexibility — not stress.
